Te Tākinga is the marae of Ngāti Te Tākinga, a hapū of the Ngāti Pikiao iwi, of the Te Arawa waka.
Te Tākinga marae is located by the Ohau Channel at Mourea and is nestled between Lakes Rotoiti and Rotorua.
Te Tākinga has been the venue for many auspicious hui over the years. This has included the inaugural Hui Amorangi for Te Manawa o Te Wheke in 1992, the first Waitangi Tribunal hearing to be held on a marae for the Kaituna River claim, the inaugural AGM of Rotoiti 15, one of the large land trusts in the district, as well as numerous consultation hui with local and central government. Local schools use the marae for concerts, “marae visits”, camps or as venues for their kapa haka practices.
Hapū members have their tangihanga, unveilings and kawe mate at Te Tākinga. Whānau will book the marae for family reunions, weddings and birthdays. It is a popular venue and has featured in New Zealand Tourism and Trade marketing campaigns. As a result the marae has become highly visible nationally and all over the world.
