1984 Waitangi Tribunal Kaituna Claim

Seventy percent of the nutrients reaching Lake Rotoiti

come from Lake Rotorua via the Ohau Channel. In 2006,

Te Takinga hapū gave consent for a diversion wall to

be attached to Te Koutu wetland to divert the nutrient-

rich flow from Lake Rotorua through the Ohau Channel

away from Lake Rotoiti, directly down the Kaituna River.

The sheet pile wall is 1300 metres long, attached to

the lakebed with king piles 70 metres deep and has an

expected lifespan of more than 50 years.
