1866 Te Koutu Wetland
- A Pā Site
In April 1866, during the land war period, Governor
George Grey visited Mourea for a few days. He stayed
in a carved house- Manuhuia and received visitors from
many hapū. Around this time, Te Koutu located at the
end of the Ohau channel was reinforced by a defensive
pallisaded pā. Ngāti Tarawhai visitors prepared carved
gateways and bought timber with them to build a new
meeting house. For their services they were paid 20 bags
of flour.
